The Gym Is a Mirror: What Training Taught Me About Not Settling

Hey friends,
Last week, I got a wake-up call.
I thought I’d been “training.” I’d been showing up, lifting weights, ticking the box. But when a gym buddy invited me to train together, I said yes—and three hours later, I walked out of the gym wired, expanded, and reminded of something important:
Just because you’re moving doesn’t mean you’re growing.

Comfort Isn’t Progress
It’s so easy to fall into a routine—same reps, same weight, same order. On the surface, you’re doing the work. But under the surface? You’re coasting and settling and getting complacent. That’s what I’d been doing—no shame, no judgment—just truth.
I was reminded of the Hermetic principle: As above, so below, as within, so without.
The gym became a mirror. I realised the same thing was happening in other parts of my life. I’d built structures and systems that worked… but I hadn’t challenged myself in a while. And when we stop challenging ourselves, we stop evolving.
Growth Needs Tension
Having someone by my side to push me, spot me, and suggest new approaches changed everything. I barbell pressed with confidence. I lifted heavier than I have in months. I left feeling alive, not just accomplished.
There’s something about being witnessed—seen in your strength, encouraged to do more—that reminds you what you’re capable of. Left to our own devices, we tend to under-reach. It’s not laziness; it’s biology. Safety loves the familiar.
But growth? It lives just beyond that edge.
Track What You Want to Improve
My friend also introduced me to a training tracker app called Hevy. I was floored. How had I not been tracking this whole time? I’d been mentally logging my lifts and progress, but that’s not the same.
Tracking turns intention into data. It shows you patterns. It removes the guesswork. And most importantly, it holds you accountable.
It reminded me of something James Clear writes in Atomic Habits:
“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
Training without tracking is like trying to build a house with no blueprint. You can make progress, sure—but you’ll hit a ceiling quickly.
Don’t Mistake Movement for Mastery
Just like in life, going through the motions doesn’t equal growth. You can show up every day and still stay stagnant. Or you can get honest, shake things up, and stretch into the next level of who you’re becoming.
That gym session taught me to stop mistaking consistency for progress. They’re both important—but only when paired with intention.
So here’s your reminder, as much as mine:
👊🏼 Keep showing up.
👊🏼But don’t stop reaching.
👊🏼 Get uncomfortable.
👊🏼 Challenge your edges.
👊🏼 And track your growth—visibly, tangibly, intentionally.
Because how you train is how you live.
And I’m here for a life that doesn’t just look good—but feels powerful, vibrant, and alive.
What area of your life have you been coasting in?
Where could a little more structure—or a little more stretch—wake something up in you?
